Critical care distribution upgrade

12 monthsBS 7671 / HTMLive site
Programme duration

12mo

Phased across 12 months to avoid clinical disruption — sequenced around ward closures and NHS Estates maintenance windows.

Distributions replaced

3

Three main distribution boards upgraded to modern MCCB panels, fully rated and documented to HTM 06-01 healthcare guidance.

Unplanned outages

0

Zero unplanned supply interruptions across the full programme on a live acute site with 24-hour clinical operations.

The Challenge

Replacing live distribution infrastructure on an acute hospital site requires more than technical competence. It demands clinical awareness, zero-tolerance for unplanned outages, and meticulous coordination with NHS Estates, ward managers and infection control — across a 12-month programme with no margin for error.

HTM 06-01 Compliance

Healthcare Technical Memorandum 06-01 sets the standard for electrical distribution in NHS facilities. Every design decision — from board specification to cable sizing and earthing arrangements — was validated against HTM requirements and independently verified before installation began.

Phased Programme Management

Works were sequenced around clinical rotas, maintenance windows and infection control protocols. Each phase was signed off by the Con-Tec project team and NHS Estates before energisation, with a full audit trail of test results and commissioning documentation passed to the Trust on completion.

The Outcome

Three main distribution boards replaced, full EICR sign-off across all circuits, and a comprehensive documentation package — including updated single-line diagrams, test certificates and O&M manuals — handed to the Trust's Estates team on completion, fully compliant with the NHS asset register format.
